The year is 1979. For centuries there has been an enthusiasm for surfing on Hawaii. However, the former materials were not durable enough for the huge waves at Hookipa Beach on Maui. Therefore, Rob Kaplan developed the first Dakine leash for surfers. This development was the foundation of the globally successful brand.
The name “da kine” is Hawaiian and means something like „the best“. The brand takes that to heart and thanks to their excellent quality became quickly known outside Hawaii.
In 1986 the brand expanded to the North American mainland of Hood River, Oregon, a true Mecca for surf, outdoor, adventure and mountain sports. The range was extended and became rapidly famous for its excellent quality and functionality.
