Safety first – no compromises. Whether you are carving down the slopes or performing tricks in the park, your helmet is your number one protective gear. In this story you will find out everything you need to know about helmets featuring innovative MIPS® technology.
What is MIPS®?
MIPS® is an additional layer of safety in the helmet that was developed to reduce rotational forces in oblique impacts. This means that MIPS® takes care of the dangerous rotational movements that occur in most falls. MIPS® technology, which is available in different versions depending on the area of application, is incorporated into the manufacture of a helmet model and cannot be integrated retrospectively.
In short:
- MIPS® = Multi-directional Impact Protection System
- Developed by scientists, not helmet brands
- Works independently of helmet construction
- Please note: MIPS® cannot be retrofitted into a helmet.
How MIPS® works – explained simply
Most falls do not happen straight on, but at an angle. This is where MIPS® comes in: there is a sliding layer between the outer shell and the inner padding of the helmet. In the event of an oblique impact, this layer can move by about 10–15 mm. This dissipates some of the rotational energy that would otherwise act directly on your brain. This significantly reduces the risk of injury in certain types of falls. MIPS® is based on the same principle as the brain's natural protective function, which allows it to move slightly within the skull in the event of an impact. This gives you additional protection – without the helmet feeling any different in everyday use.
Why is MIPS® a game changer?
- More protection for the most common types of falls (including oblique impacts)
- Independent safety brand – like GORE-TEX® for clothing
- Developed by scientists – not a marketing gimmick
- Many top helmets are already equipped with MIPS®
And best of all: your helmet fits as usual – only with added safety.
I always shred carefully.

How can I tell if a helmet is equipped with MIPS®?
It's simple: look for the yellow MIPS® logo. It is either on the outside of the helmet or on a small sticker on the inside. You will also find this information in the product description and often on the label. If you see the logo, you can be sure that your helmet has the additional protection technology built in.
