Transceivers with search acoustics and marking function for multiple burials

avalanche transceiver: search and find

The Avalanche Transceiver has a transmitting and search operation. On departure and during descents you wear a transceiver on your body in its harness in transmission mode. Only if part of your group has been caught in an avalanche you should change to search operation. This is so the only radio signals which are being picked up are from group members who are under debris. Then move in a group into the unsecured terrain within 60 m of each other. Modern three antenna transceivers allow you an accurate and fast positioning, where it does not matter which way the victim has been buried. Even more victims of the avalanche can be found this way and faster because the direction of the victim on the device facilitates faster searching .

„With all of the innovations and because they keep on getting lighter the avalanche transceiver must not be forgotten, but first, you must know how to use yours. The most modern and expensive transceiver is useless if you don’t know how to use it properly. Also, it is pointless to consider if you need a transceiver for this run and not for that one, if you have it one use it. The avalanche transceiver is simply an integral part of your equipment when you are riding off-piste.“

Orthovox: an automatic exchange between search and send.

All Orthovox avalanche transceivers can automatically switch between, ‘send’ and ‘search’ functions. This is additional life insurance in the case of a secondary avalanche. When the device senses a longer standstill, it will enter the ‘send’ mode. Orthovox has three different transceivers in its line, included in all of the transceivers is the smart antenna. The digital 3-antenna technology automatically switches to the strongest transmitting antenna when analysing the avalanche. All of the devices from Orthovox are updateable.

Orthovox S1: The transceiver for professionals

The S1 + combines the best of all situations, whether you are under or over the avalanche. When you open the device, you will be directed to the search function. The 360-degree real-time display shows you the victim’s position in the avalanche. When in fine search, the patented circular display and intuitive search acoustics are a great help. With S1 + you use two AAA batteries for up to 250 hours.

Pieps: 40 years of experience and development of transceivers

As with the rest of the market Pieps have developed an automatic ‘search’ to ‘send’ switch, however, this has to be done with a Pieps Service Centre. The switching to the strongest receiving antenna is called the Auto Antenna Switch. A real innovation from Pieps is the support for the electronic iPROBE, which can be coupled with the avalanche transceiver and show the signal with the search.

DSP Pro and Pro Ice: The models for pros from Pieps

The scanning function of the DSP Pro means that multiple burials can be found in reception range. You can also check the transmitting frequency of other transceivers in your group, so you can find any deviations from the standard transmitting frequency. Additionally, the DSP supports the TX600 transmitter for animals which sends a different frequency and can still be received. The integrated three-dimensional inclinometer analyses the steepness of the slope so you can better judge the terrain which you are riding. Three batteries provide an incredible 400 hours of signal.
