Ride to all Fast Entry bindings

From the early days to Step On®, Mulit-Entry and FASE™

Fast Entry bindings are now a staple in the snowboard world – and for good reason. They save time, are incredibly convenient, and deliver top performance. In recent years, these bindings have made significant improvements in ride feel and safety.

New this season: The FASE™ system – a game-changing upgrade that combines the feel of traditional two-strap bindings with easy entry. Used by brands Bataleon, Rome, Jones, and ThirtyTwo in some of their bindings. Furthermore, Union now also offers Atlas Step On®. And the Supermatic – initially developed by Nidecker – is now available from more brands, too.

Tried and tested top binding systems like Burton Step On® or Nidecker Supermatic are still going strong, as well as the affordable SP Fastec360. Fans of the legendary Flow design – also a fast entry system – will now find a wide range of Flow design bindings at the Swiss snowboard specialist Nidecker, following the acquisition of Flow Bindings a few years ago.

What are Fast Entry bindings?

Fast Entry bindings (also called Easy Entry or Speed Entry) do make strapping in quick and easy – no more fiddling with straps or sitting down in the snow. Compared to traditional bindings, they feature clever mechanisms like fold-down highbacks or automatic opening and closing systems. You’re ready to go in seconds, without kneeling or sitting down – ideal when the slopes are busy or your friends are on skis.

Snowboard bindings systems with fast entry

All Fast Entry systems provide quick and simple access, but there are different types and technologies:

Step On®

They Step On® system revolutionized step-in bindings when it debuted in 2017. They are the result of innovative development work by legendary snowboard brand Burton. In 2017, the previous Step-In systems were redesigned from the ground up.These strapless bindings provide comfort, safety, and performance, and are now available for all riding levels, including kids. Note: Step On® bindings only work with compatible Step On® boots, which are available from Burton, DC, and Nitro. It’s an excellent choice for anyone looking to skip the strap adjustment routine and save time at the lift.

Multi-Entry, Dual-Entry, Rear-Entry

Binding systems known as rear-entry, dual entry or multi-entry allow flexible entry. The highbacks fold down for easy entry. Once inside, lift the highback and lock the lever. Very simple. Getting out of the binding is just as easy. Adjustable straps offer an additional option for stepping into the binding and allow for a custom fit to your boot shape and riding style.

If you want a rear-entry system that helps you focus on your ride, the high-end binding Supermatic from Nidecker or the affordable Fastec360 from SP, are the perfect choice. The Flow bindings, which have been popular for decades and also allow for quick entry, can be found in Nidecker's product range since the acquisition of Flow Bindings, but continue to be sold under the model name Flow.

FASE™

FASE™ represents the next evolution in two-strap bindings – blending the feel and adjustability of traditional setups with a quick-entry system. Brands like Bataleon, Rome, Jones, and ThirtyTwo are among the first to offer models with FASE™. Pro riders like Victor de Le Rue and Ståle Sandbech already endorse this technology. These bindings are especially ideal for advanced riders who spend a lot of time on the snow.

FASE, Fast Entry! I initially had a few doubts, but on the first day of riding it, I forgot I was on a new binding as it felt so comfortable and performed great!

Victor de Le Rue, Freeride World Champion und Blue Tomato Teamrider

Pros and cons of Fast Entry bindings

Pros

  • Easy entry – quickly ready for shredding
  • Comfortable handling: easy to get in and out of the binding, no tedious adjusting of straps, no need to take off your gloves
  • Less strain on your back – depending on the system, less bending. Some fast entry bindings can be operated with just one hand.
  • Comparable hold and similar performance to classic snowboard bindings with straps
  • Lower weight: depending on the bindings model, lighter than strap bindings

Cons

  • Depending on the model, less adjustability than standard two-strap bindings
  • Mechanisms may freeze or clog with snow
  • Step On® bindings require Step On® boots.
  • Some Fast Entry bindings, on the other hand, are heavier than classic strap bindings

Who are Fast Entry bindings good for?

  • Snowboarders who mainly want to shred and rarely need to adjust their bindings
  • Snowpark riders who want to stay in the flow – without long adjustment breaks
  • Parents or instructors who often have to step out of their bindings when teaching kids or groups
  • People with back problems who cannot bend deeply

What is better: 2-strap or Fast Entry?

As in many other things, choosing the right snowboard binding is a matter of taste, needs and budget. Think about what features you need for your requirements. Fast entry binding systems offer practical features, comfort and time savings, but above all the support and top performance you know from 2-strap bindings. In addition to experienced snowboarders, professionals are also increasingly opting for fast binding systems. Some fast entry systems, such as FASE™, Supermatic or the Flow design, offer the advantages of both systems: in addition to fast entry, they are also equipped with adjustable straps.

Ultimately, however, it's up to you, because classic 2-strap bindings allow you to step out of the binding almost as quickly. They offer construction designs that are tried and tested over decades and are slightly cheaper on average – it's just that stepping into the binding isn't that 'fast'.

How do I care for Fast Entry bindings?

Same as any binding:

  • Check screws and parts for tightness and cracks
  • Ensure the mechanisms open and close smoothly
  • Remove snow and ice before stepping in
  • For storage, especially over summer: unmount bindings, let them dry, and store them in a safe place
