‘Dogtown’ was the nickname for the residential areas with criminality problems near Venice Beach and Santa Monica at the end of the 60s. That’s where a group of teenagers came together to surf the bay located right outside their front doors. The best surfers in the city became part of the Zehpyr surf team and took the bay over for their own purposes. Soon after that, the second generation took it upon themselves to bring surfing to the streets. Jim Muir founded Dogtown Skateboards shortly thereafter - and the company has been in business for 40 years ever since!
