Union's brand new split system

The Union Charger features a new pinless dual-lock system that allows for a quick and easy switch from walk mode to ride mode with just one flick of the wrist. No more fiddly long pins that have to be inserted into the touring brackets every time. The robust design is made for demanding tours and thanks to the natural board feel, you can enjoy the downhill to the fullest.

Pinless Dual Lock Split System
The Union Pinless System is simple and very quick to use. To switch to ride mode, simply pull up the lever under the heel and place the binding over the disc at a 90° angle. Turn the binding anticlockwise and then push the lever down.
To switch to walk mode, release the lever again and remove the binding from the board. Bring the binding into a vertical position and align it with the bracket tips of the touring bracket. Now push it inwards until you feel it click into place.

Highback
The EXP3 Highback was developed specifically for splitboarding. It comes with a quick release for the tilt angle (Forward Lean). This allows you to provide more freedom of movement with just one hand movement.

Baseplate
Mixed with carbon, Duraflex CB is lighter and much stiffer than typical glass reinforced nylon parts. The footbed has a special Non-Stick™ coating. This prevents ice from forming on the footbed and highback.

Straps
The ExoFrame 5.0 ankle straps are the ultimate connection between boot and binding. The progressive flex allows for quick response and power transfer for demanding riding at high speeds. Simple, lightweight, durable - The TS 4.0+ toe straps keep your boots bombproof and secure in the binding without you even knowing it's there. A shorter contact surface for the buckle saves weight and reduces pressure points. The Magnesium S1 buckles are made of magnesium and aluminium. A good combination of lightness and stability.

I have ridden a few splitboard bindings now and I can confidently say that the chargers are the most "true-to-the-art" splitboard binding out there at the moment of this review.

The flex of the binding resembles a normal snowboard binding which you can really push hard and not have them fail you strength-wise. They flex great aswell compared to the standard aluminium binding systems, which allows freestyle tricks in the backcountry.

All this being said, i would not recomend buying these bindings if you are looking to have a binding that lasts more than one season. Note that i drive these bindings to the absolute limit with more than 60+ days in the backcountry per seasons. Personal experiences below:
- the pucksystem wears out fast, and makes it so that the binding will shift a few degrees back and forth while being locked in.
- the walking system has pins that are not screwed in, wich means that if you have not engaged the toe-links correctly, you are one step away from ruining your day in the mountain.
- the locki-in-lever breaks if you use too much force while trying to unlock the binding.

Union bindings are great, dont get me wrong. But personally i would wait for the updated version.

I've been riding the Union Explorer bindings and was really curious to try the new pinless system of the Charger. I go touring in all sort of terrain and need bindings that I can relly on in any conditions. Union's build quality is always top tier, so this was an easy decision for me. I bought size M for my size 9US boots, fits perfectly.

Early season touring at -10°C, the bindings performed super well. Never a problem with the system. Just tilt the bindings all the way forward and slide in and out of walk mode, and put the bindings on the interface, twist and push down the lever to go into ride mode. Super reliable, super easy and you don't need a lot of strength after the exhausting ascend, since you can push down the lever by just stepping into the bindings. I hope the system will be durable, cannot tell yet, but the lever seems like it could be a bit more robust.

Overall I am super happy with Union's new pinless system and would recommend this to riders looking for a reliable and easy to handle splitboard binding.

Die Bindung wird über eine Grundplatte auf das Snowboard montiert. Leider musste ich schon nach der ersten Abfahrt feststellen, dass über diesen Bajonettverschluss Spiel entsteht. Es Fühlt sich an als wäre die Bindung lose montiert. Laut Union ist dies aber völlig normal.
Für mich ist die Bindung somit unbrauchbar.
