Patagonia's neoprene-free Yulex® wetsuits, now made in a Fair Trade-Certified™ factory, are 85 % natural rubber and 15 % synthetic rubber. They replace a petroleum-based material with a vegetable-based material and offer the same warmth and performance characteristics as conventional stretch neoprene. At the same time, they reduce CO2 emissions in the manufacturing process by up to 80 %. Manufactured from materials certified by the Rainforest Alliance Forest Stewardship Council®, Patagonia mixes natural rubber with chlorine-free synthetic rubber to enhance ozone and UV resistance and to meet its stringent strength, elongation and durability requirements.
Since 1985, Patagonia has pledged 1% of sales to the preservation and restoration of the natural environment. 1% for the Planet is an alliance of businesses that understand the necessity of protecting the natural environment. They understand that profit and loss are directly linked to its health, and are concerned with the social and environmental impacts of industry.
Patagonia's mission statement is to "build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis." Clear as day! They work hard to produce innovative, high-quality, simple and utile apparel that help explorers and outdoor enthusiasts achieve their dreams.
