The new Backland FR range is based upon the popular Automatic range of skis, powerful, mostly directional chargers which were more than capable on hard snow. Atomic have taken this formula and added HRZN Tech to the tips and reduced the weight. The result is a ski which still goes as hard and fast as it's predecessors but still is agile and light enough for touring.
The Backland Fr 109 is a mid-wide freeride ski, if you like skiing fast and dropping cliffs on a stable platform, this ski is for you. The lightness and quickness of the ski also mean that if you want to mount a touring binding and do shorter tours to untouched terrain, you can.
A 109 mm waist provides ample floatation but isn't too broad that the ski becomes overly cumbersome. A slightly tapered tip and tail help with turn initiation in softer snow.
Atomic use their powder rocker for the ski, 25 % rocker in the tip, 10 % rocker in the tail and a strong 65 % camber underfoot, means that the ski has the floatation from the tips and tails but still maintains strong edge grip from the camber underfoot. The HRZN Tech which has been added to the tips is a horizontal rocker which increases the surface area by 10 % without increasing weight.
In a break from the past Automatic series, which used metal laminates for stability, the Backland Fr 117 uses the Light Woodcore of poplar wood and the new Carbon Backbone. The Light Woodcore loses weight without sacrificing shock absorption and the Carbone Backbone works as an ultra-light stabiliser running the length of the ski. The step down sidewalls provides grip where you need it, underfoot and lightness and durability where you don't.
